Romanian Liberals, two other parties form center-right pole

Romania’s governing National Liberal Party (PNL) and two other non-parliamentary political groups, the Christian-Democratic National Peasants Party (PNTCD) and the Popular Alliance (AP) formed a new alliance on Tuesday which they heralded as the country’s center-right political pole.

The deal was signed by PNL president and prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, PNTCD leader Petre Marian Milut and AP leader Emil Constantinescu, a former President of Romania who fell in the background of local politics for years.

Tariceanu presented the deal as “a moment that would have been necessary when Romania concluded its transition from communism to capitalism”.

The goals of the new alliance are to promote the social and economic integration of Romania and a stronger representation in the European Parliament.
