Two Romanian gendarmes wounded in Kosovo

Two Romanian gendarmes were wounded in street fights that broke in Kosovo capital Pristina on Saturday, according to TV news reports in Romania. The head of the Romanian unit in Kosovo, Mircea Olaru, told news station Realitatea TV that the two suffered only minor injuries during the confrontations.

About 2,000 ethnic Albanians protested in Pristina on Saturday, calling for unconditional independence for their province. 72 people were injured during the events, 25 of which needed medical intervention. According to Reuters, two people died in the confrontations.

The protest comes as UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari has tabled a plan for a new status for the UN-administered Serbian province.
