France beats Romania in Davis Cup, advances to quarters


Romania let France advance to the Davis Cup quarterfinal last weekend when Andrei Pavel lost 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to Richard Rasquet in Clermont-Ferrand pm Sunday. Gasquet let Pavel no chance in his attempt to get the third point against Romania. Pavel&Co. retain a chance for a tie to remain in the World Cup.

Once the victory established, Arnaud Clement replaced Sebastien Grosjean for the final match against Florin Mergea and won 7-5. 7-6 (3), sealing an overall 4-1 over Romania. On Saturday, Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau defeated Clement and Michael Llondra in the doubles to keep their country in the race after Gasquet beat Hanescu and Grosjean defeated Pavel on Friday,

On Sunday, younger Gasquet had little trouble to down Pavel, 33, whose risks could not overturn the situation as Gasquet won five gains after a surprising 5-2 for Pavel I the third set.
