The Romanian Parliament rejected on Monday a motion tabled by the opposition Democrats against the governing Liberals as a majority of MPs opted not to vote today. Many parliamentarians of the opposition Social Democrats (PSD) and the Greater Romania Party (PRM) chose not to express their votes, and the motion was rejected.
The Democratic Party (PD)-supported motion was backed by the PD and their fellow Liberal Democrats (PLD) alone. The opposition Social Democrats (PSD) and the Greater Romania Party (PRM) said they would not vote, while the oppositi0on Conservative Party and the governing minority party the Hungarian Democrats (UDMR) voted against the motion.
Prior to the vote today, PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu held a speech before the Parliament saying that the vote on the motion pushed against his government would make a difference between democratic results and populism.
He said the only reason it has come to the current situation was “the power hunger of a character (President Basescu) who plans to subordinate all power in Romania.
And Tariceanu said there are still many fundamental reforms to be done that have led to the EU accession of Romania.
