PM Tariceanu changes mind again: Romanian troops to stay in Iraq

Romanian prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said on Tuesday that Romanian troops will continue their missions abroad, two weeks after he called for the withdrawal of Romanian soldiers from Iraq by Christmas this year.

Tariceanu repeated new Defense minister Teodor Melescanu’s statement yesterday that Romania must make a decision on troops withdrawal according to a well established plan agreed with foreign allies.

PM Tariceanu had made the “home by Christmas” announcement on March 26, when he also served as interim Foreign minister.

For his part, Melescanu said today that Romania would fulfill all its obligations and that a schedule for withdrawal should be discussed at Supreme Defense Council level.
