The Democratic Party is most favored by Romanians, followed by the opposition Social Democrats (PSD), according to a new poll published last weekend. The Democrats (PD), who are about to be removed from the governing coalition on Monday, have the support of 34% of Romanians, followed by PSD with 22%.
The National Liberal Party (PNL), which would form the bulk of a reshuffled government to be announced today, has the support of 11% of Romanian voters.
They share the same percentage with the far-right Greater Romania Party (PRM) and the New Generation Party (PNG) of populist businessman-politician Gigi Becali, according to the study by Romanian polster INSOMAR.
If PD and PNL would go into elections on common lists, their alliance would be voted by 42% of the population should elections take place next Sunday.
The poll shows President Traian Basescu would be voted by 42% of the population, followed at a large margin by Becali, with 18%. Social Democratic leader Mircea Geoana would only get 15% of the vote, followed by PRM leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor with 11%.
PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu would get only 5% of the votes should elections take place on Sunday.
PNL’s remaining coalition partner in the reshuffled government, UDMR, would only get 5% of the votes, according to the INSOMAR poll.
