Car registration tax worth one third of expected

Romanian state cashed some 25 million euros out of the cars' first registration tax, during the first quarter of the year, Financial Administration vice president Daniel Chitoiu declared on Friday. The results are far below the Finance Ministry's expectations, which anticipated a 20 million euros per month income.

Administration Ministry data shows that the amount of registration for old cars decreased some 35% in January and February, with 8393 units, compared to 12,827 units in the first 60 days of 2006.

The first registration tax is worth, depending on the age and pollution degree of the vehicle, between 160 and 9,000 euros.

The tax is currently filed against in the European Court.
