Romania nuclear power plant in Cernavoda may shut down due to severe drought

Romanian Economy Minister Varujan Vosganian said on Tuesday that the country's energy system would function at normal parameters in July. He warned, however, that after August 15 the Romanian nuclear power plant in Cernavoda may be shut down if the Danube river decreased its debit further.

As a prevention method, Vosganian described a mechanism through which varios energy producers might receive funds to produce energy when deficit hits the market.

The minister assured that if the hydrologic potential of the Danube would no longer be capable to support the Cernavoda energy production, there exists a supplementary capacity to enter into force from Termoelectrica, the main electricity supplier on the market.

This will determine an increase of investments in the area with about 1.26 billion Romanian RON, 600 million RON of which are needed just to assure that the mechanism will function.

Consequently, this will call for modernization works of the electrical distribution networks of about 1.2 billion euro even if, for the project to reach its goals, the needed amount is 2 billion euro.
