Finance expert Marcu Nicu named ANI president


National Integrity Council (ANI) chose Marcu Nicu, ex-Finance Ministry’s representative as President today. Nicu ran against a represeintaive of the main Opposition party, Social Democrats (PSD), Simona Teodoroiu.

Out of the 13 members present at the meeting, 7 voted for Nicu, 4 for Teodoroiu and 2 abstained. The new ANI head doesn't have a political stand. even though he was for a short while member of the Liberal party.

ANI will the body entitled to check on digitaries' wealth, as mandatory in the pre-accession protocols between Romania and the European Union. Even more, ANI was one of the main progress indicators mentioned by EU officials in their report on Romania, officially presented last week.

After the ANI law passed the Parliament, the institution starts building its structure by setting up the procedures to elect the main members of the board (president and vice-president), after all legal demeures are tabled in Senate for approval.
