Starting in 2007, Romanian citizens will be able to enter 22 European states using nothing but their ID cards. The decision was made public on Wednesday by the Interior minister, Vasile Blaga.
Three EU states are still reticent: Cyprus, Sweden and the Czech Republic still demand passports. The discussions continue in the case of Sweden, but seem to be closed with the other two.
The only problem with Sweden is that Romanian ID cards don’t bear bar codes. Passports will remain in use as an alternative and as documents for non-EU countries.
