Today the venerable New York Times published an article called Competing for Clients, and Paying by the Click discussing how lawyers are using Google’s sponsored links (AdWords) to find clients. They also referenced this list of high-paying keywords on CyberWyre. Which is our topic of discussion today. (Be warned, this is going to be a very long post…)
Regular readers will recall that we’ve previously discussed high-paying keyword lists in quite some detail. I’m always skeptical of the numbers reported by most lists for a variety of reasons. Let’s look at CyberWyre’s list, which I’ve cleaned up a bit by removing duplicate entries:

Most of these keyphrases are lawyer-oriented, which was the point of the NYT article. And when new AdSense publishers see these kinds of lists published, they start salivating… and shortly thereafter there’s a new mesothelioma site born.
But how accurate are these numbers? One of the problem I have with these lists is that they rarely disclose how and when the values were generated. Here’s the list I get when I use AdSenseAccelerator on the same keyword list:

AdSenseAccelerator gets its values from AdWords. As you can see, the numbers are in fact lower than what CyberWyre is reporting. What I like to look at in these reports, however, is the bid gap. AdSenseAccelerator shows the estimates (Google only provides estimates for these values) for the bids at different positions in the sponsored links of a search engine results page. Look at the bids for mesothelioma, second in our list. The first bid is high, $55.76, and so is bid 3, $37.17, but bid 4 drops quite dramatically down to $3.59. Other keywords have sharper drops.
Still, there are a lot of high values here, which would tempt us to build some content around those keywords. But remember two important facts:
* These are search network bid prices, not content network (AdSense) bids. Many advertisers are savvy enough to disable content network bidding or else bid much, much less for it.
* Advertisers pay less than the bid price in almost all cases, sometimes much less. A lot of the first place bidders bid extremely high just to get that first spot, knowing of course that they’ll pay a bit more than what the second place bidder pays, which is often a much lower bid.
Plus we haven’t even touched smart pricing…
And, of course, with so many AdSense publishers out there looking at these lists you can be certain there’s a lot of competition for those keywords. If you can’t get traffic to your pages, you won’t make any money. You can put up as many mesothelioma pages as you want, but getting your pages to outrank all those lawyers’ pages isn’t going to be easy.
I’m not saying (and have never said) that high-paying keyword lists are useless. But you have to be a bit skeptical and do your own research to figure out how “profitable” some of these niches really are and whether you have any chance at all of making money with them yourself.
