Romanian President to attend GUAM summit

Romanian President Traian Basescu and two other CEE heads of states will attend a summit in Baku on Monday and Tuesday bringing together the leaders of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and the Moldovan Republic (GUAM) to discuss measures to limit the influence of Russia on the energy sector of the region.

Basescu will be accompanied there by Polish counterpart Leck Kaczynski and Lithuanian leader Valdas Adamkus, AFP reports.

The summit will mostly deal with Azeri oil deliveries through Georgia and the Black Sea to the Ukrainian Odessa-Brody pipeline. A joint force to deal with peacekeeping operations in the ex-USSR countries will also be formed, according to Ukrainian leader Viktor Yushchenko.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin is not expected to attend the reunion because it overlaps with a planned visit to Luxembourg and Brussels. Moldova will be represented in Baku by PM Vasile Tarlev.
