Romanian President Traian Basescu issued a presidential decree suspending IT&C minister Zsolt Nagy from office on Monday. A presidential press release says that the reason for Nagy’s suspension is a criminal inquiry currently under way on Nagy’s name. Prosecutors of the High Court of Justice suspect the minister of supporting a transnational organized crime group.
The inquiry was initiated on April 27 but then-interim President Nicolae Vacaroiu, who served as head of state while Basescu was suspended for allegedly breaching the Constitution, said Nagy should not be suspended.
Nagy was facing High Court prosecutors on Monday at noon on charges of support for a transnational organized crime group and treason by leaking classified information.
The Romanian media has been publishing revelations for months about the Hungarian Democrat (UDMR) minister’s alleged links to an economic espionage network led by Bulgarian citizen Stamen Stanchev. He allegedly leaked information that favored certain bidders for consulting services or the privatization of Romanian companies including Radiocomunicatii SA, the Romanian Mail and Romtelecom.
The case also sees former Economy minister Codrut Seres charged of serving the interests of Stanchev’s network in several cases from cheap energy contracts to various privatization activities.
