Despite being a non-EU country, Iceland plans to restrict the access of Romanian and Bulgarian workers on its market until January 1, 2009, according to Iceland Review Online. Authorities in the country plan to apply a transitional period for the free movement of labour for Romanian and Bulgarian workers, Social Services minister Magnus Stefansson was quoted as saying.
That means starting January 1, 2007, when the two countries join the EU, workers from Romania and Bulgaria would need permits in order to work in Iceland.
While it is not a EU member state, Iceland belongs to the European Economic Area and to the Schengen pact.
