Deputatii disagree with Internet publication of Securitate files

Romanian deputies rejected on Tuesday a legislative measure that pushed for the publication of files belonging to the former communist secret police, the Securitate, on the Internet.

The initiative suggested that the main body studying the Securitate archives, CNSAS, should publish the documents on a website so that anybody had access to who and in what terms collaborated with the dreaded service before 1989.

But deputies proposed a new formula that supports the publication of CNSAS decisions in various cases involving officials who allegedly collaborated or not with the Securitate, along with documents that support those decisions if the targeted people agree with it.

Deputies argued that the change to the CNSAS law were in breach with human rights provisions. The move had also received a negative vote of the Judicial and Defense commissions of the House last week.
