Romanian President: No more Securitate officers in Intelligence Service ranks

Romanian President Traian Basescu shared a „yet to be checked” piece of information that says the Romanian Intelligence Service-SRI no longer employs officers from the ex-Division I of the Securitate - the communist-era intelligence service that SRI has inherited - and only one former officer of the Division VI of the said institution, who is about to request retirement.

President Basescu made the statement as he presided over a ceremony where parliamentarian George Maior was officially named head of the SRI. Basescu said the institution must continue efforts to get rid of the image as a Securitate-style institution, as well as procedures to publish the Securitate files on the names of Romanian citizens that were tailed in political police operations.
