Twins Maria and Anastasia Tolmachevy, the representatives of Russia in the Eurovision Junior 2006 children music contest, won the fourth edition of the contest in Bucharest on December 2. They defeated all competition with “Veseniy jazz” (Spring Jazz) that drew them 154 points.
Romania’s New Star Music concluded the contest on the sixth position with “Povestea mea” (My Story, 80 points total), after Russia, Belarus, Sweden, Spain and Serbia.

Romanian Defense Ministry to pay EUR220 mln. on 7 Italian planes
Alenia Aeronautica, a subsidiary of Italian group Finmeccanica, is about to sign a contract with the Romanian Defense Ministry for the sale of seven C-27J military transport planes. According to a Alenia press release quoted by Italian media, the company was invited by the Ministry to negotiate the contract evaluated at some 220 million euro.
The talks come in the wake of an official visit Italian Defense minister Arturo Parisi paid to Romania on November 22-23.
The Romanian Air Force Command had announced its intention to replace the transportation planes fleet now formed mostly of AN-24/26 planes, which did not comply with NATO standards due to their limitations and lack of spare parts.
The Italian C-27J plans are also used by other new NATO member states including Bulgaria and Lithuania while the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia are about to conclude their own procurement contracts.

European colors light up Bucharest
Downtown Bucharest was lit up for the winter holidays in the colors of the European Union on Friday evening in a ceremony attended by President Traian Basescu and Bucharest mayor Adriean Videanu.
Thousands of lights were turned on along major traffic routes of the Bucharest capital, especially in the downtown area linking the Unirii Square and the Romana Square, via the Universitatii Square. Most of the lights there are white, yellow and blue, the colors of the European Union.

Appeal in strategic privatizations scandal
The four persons arrested in the scandal of strategic privatizations appealed the arrest decision and will be heard by the Supreme Court of Justice on Saturday.
Ministry officials Mihai Donciu and Dorinel Mucea, as well as the international consultants Stamen Stanchev and Vadim Benyatov Don were arrested for 20 days on November 29th.
All four were charged with treason through transmitting state secrets and with espionage in strategic privatizations.
Defense attorney claim their clients can’t be arrested because they were already forbidden to leave town and, even more, their files didn’t see any new evidence being added.
During the hearings, Stantchev emphasized on the fact that he has no special relations with the Economy Minister, Codrut Seres, or the IT&C Minster, Zsolt Nagy.

Romanian hacker accused of breaking into NASA computers
A Romanian youngster is accused of illegally accessing over 150 computers employed by US public institutions, thus causing over 1.5 million dollars worth of damage. The institutions include NASA, the Energy Department and the US Navy.
The Romanian is 26 year-old Victor Faur, from the city of Arad. Nine network crimes and a charge of conspiracy were filed against him. In case he’s found guilty, he risks no less than 54 years in prison, said Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the Federal Prosecution Office.
Faur was already heard by the Romanian authorities and will be brought to Los Angeles after the local charges are decided on.
The American Government believes that Faur is the head of a hacker organization called “The white hats team”, which has the purpose to break into the US official institutions’ computers simply because they are considered as the safest in the world.
After hacking in a network, Faur would make all the computers work as a chat room, in order to communicate with other members of his network.

Prices grow, driving regulations get tougher on National Day
The celebrating of the National Day brings along a few boulevards closed for the military parade in the Northern Bucharest, 5% more expensive electricity, a pig vaccinating campaign, a new 200 RON (some 50 euros) banknote and the roughest driving regulations in Europe.
Starting today, the life is going to get a lot more complicated for drivers in Romania. The new system, based on contravention points, leads to the automatic annulment of the driver’s license at 15 points worth of mistakes.
On the other hand, drivers are no longer responsible for accidents caused by pedestrians’ mistake.
